The Beginning of your Adventure

There are many a thing that Nessie could be, but were here to depict the mystery and help justify what Nessie really is. There are several things that have been guessed, and were here to tell you about a few of the many and debunk some along the way! We will also be telling you of reports that have been made on the Loch Ness monster, photos of the loch ness monster, tales that have been told and passed down about Nessie, and even what the study of what the Loch Ness monster is. So hold on tight as you embark on an amazing adventure of facts and fakes of the Loch Ness monster as we get down to what it really is.

What is the Loch Ness Monster?

In Scotland, there is a lake called Loch Ness that has the largest number of freshwater in the United Kingdom. But, this lake is most known for its mysterious and intriguing creature that it is thought to behold. Nessie [The Loch Ness Monster] has been said to be living in Loch Ness lake. Thousands of sightings of Nessie have gone all the way back to the 6th century. Most sightings occurred in the 1930's when people starting providing alleged photographic evidence. Most of these photos have been fakes but many people are confused on what to believe. A description of the Loch Ness monster includes: long neck, smallish head, and a huge hump that pokes out of the water. This indicates a very large animal.Scientist have been conducting experiments to create theories on what people are really seeing.

What could Nessie Be?

There are many a thing that Nessie could be, but here are a few, and some of them have been debunked and junked but I'll stop telling you what I think and let you decide for yourself!

 A Plesiosaur
Plesiosaurs were marine reptiles that died out over 65 million years ago. There are two problems with this theory. One being that Lake Loch Ness is a very cold body of water(the average temperature is 5.5˚C) and an air breathing animal would have to come up for air quite frequently. Secondly if a group of plesiosaurs was there that survived there would have to be a whole population.
In 2003, a fossilised vertebra of a plesiosaur was found on the banks of Loch Ness, but due to the local geology it was not a fossil bearing type of rock, so many people regard this as a hoax placed there by a prankster.
A Seal
Some people can accidentally identify things wrong that they see in the Loch Ness Lake. Several could assume it is the monster because they are at Loch Ness.It has also been said that there is a new species of seal in Loch Ness - a long-necked seal. The unfortunate reality of this is that there is no such discovered species of seal.
Other Theories
It has also been said that it was a circus elephant being bathed, an overgrown eel due to its lack of puberty, a sturgeon(even though they haven't been known to even breed in that country), some say a ghost, and even a tulpa(a mirage made up by people who want to believe). There are many more things that have been said and already so many that have been ruled out, so what do you think?

Different Legends of Nessie

Many legends have been conducted staring with the first sighting of Nessie. The Scottish legend started when a swimmer claimed to be rescued from a lake creature. After that, stories of Nessie were spreading around all over the place without evidence to prove these stories to be true. Some stories are very creative and spooky. For example, in Scottish Folklore, magical water horses that look like Nessie lure small children into the water by offering them a ride on its back. Once the children climb aboard, their hands get stuck to the beast and they get dragged into the water until they drowned. The next day, their livers wash ashore. This legend was probably created to scare the children into either staying out of the water or being very care full while in the water. Many people create their own legends to make the Loch Ness monster more believable or to make people think that it was just a myth. There are many different legends that may or may not be true about the Nessie.

Who Studies Nessie?

Believe it or not there is a real study of the Loch Ness monster. It is something called cryptozoology. Cryptozoology is the study of hidden (undiscovered) animals.  This means that people who study animals that have been claimed to be seen and are yet still undiscovered ( some examples are the yeti, Bigfoot, and sea serpents) are called cryptozoologists. The way they study these animals is by studying the evidence others have found such as pictures, videos, eyewitness accounts, but some just go out and look for the evidence themselves. Even in modern day time now there is still a crytozoologist living at Lake Loch Ness year round. Some cryptozoologists dedicate their lives to the search and have not seen a bit of evidence. Proving that the Lochness monster is real is very important to these dedicated people who have seen no evidence yet they still believe.
But, you dont have to deticate your life to the Loch Ness monster to study it. There are people who organize expeditions to search for the Loch Ness monster. An example of a Loch Ness monster expedition is the Sir Edward Mountain Expedition. He read a book on the monster and decided to order a search made up of twenty men all with binoculars and cameras. They stayed at the Loch for five weeks, but sadly none of their information was conclusive.
So as you can see you dont have to have your whole life wrapped around the study of the Loch Ness monster, in fact you dont even have to know barely anything, to study it, but you still can.

Articles on Nessie

Many articles have been conducted on the Loch Ness monster. Newspapers have shown people that a monster in the Loch Ness lake might exist. Still, no evidence was provided but that didn't stop the media from warning the public. Below will be some newspapers about Nessie and we will provide captions of what they say so they will be easier to read.
LOCH NESS MONSTER IN THE NEWS This article states that the Loch Ness monster is a beast with a 7ft. long neck. It also says that a nightmare is being shaped. This got many people interested with what the Loch Ness monster was and what danger it proposed to humans.
LOCH NESS MONSTER IN THE NEWSThis article claims that Nessie has "GREEN EYES AND RED NOSTRILS". It also says that it carries and "evil grin". Pictures of Nessie

Many people have claimed to have a picture of the Loch Ness monster. Some pictures were fakes but they all might not be.
File:Lochnessmonster.jpg
For example, this picture [from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lochnessmonster.jpg] is one of the most popular photos of Nessie. This picture is most likely a hoax because it could be anything.

This photo is a sonar picture of Nessie. People say that this photo can be anything other than the Loch Ness monster. For example, it could be driftwood or some kind of other animal. http://mrbslasite.wordpress.com/2010/03/24/loch-ness-monster-photos/

This picture can also be anything. The most popular theory is that its just a pile of rocks. http://mrbslasite.wordpress.com/2010/03/24/loch-ness-monster-photos/
Photo: Swimming elephant may have been Loch Ness monster
This picture that was found on http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/03/0309_0603009_loch_ness.html, is a very good picture of what the Loch Ness monster could have been. It might have been just an elephant.

All these pictures are supposed to prove the existence of Nessie. But what do you think???

The Plesiosaurus

The plesiosaurus is a prehistoric dinosaur that lived in the cretaceous period and that looks just like Nessie, or what the people are describing Nessie to look like. It grew to be twenty three meters long, making it among some of the largest sea creatures. It was a very successful reptile that thrived during the age of the dinosaurs. The plesiosaur was easily identifiable by its four large flippers. The neck of this animal was very long.  The plesiosaurus lived and thrived up until about 65 million years ago. Many plesiosaur fossils have been found along the coast of England. Many people have theorized that the modern day loch ness monster, along with many other myths are modern day plesiosaurs. So, people might actually be seeing a plesiosaur rather than Nessie.

In Conclusion

Considering all of the information that we have gathered about the Loch Ness monster, we can conclude the following: There are many stern believer in the Loch Ness monster. Some that believe enough to pursue it as a life career. There are also others that think of it as a good way to trick people.
We have told you about the wonderous tales of the Loch Ness monster, what the Loch Ness monster could be, articles on nessie, pictures, who studies Nessie, and more. But there is still one thing that remains standing. Do you believe?

Peyton's Summary

The Loch Ness monster started off as just a lake-monster legend, but grew into something much bigger. It all started in Scotland when a lake creature was presumed to be living in Loch Ness lake. Reports of sightings date all the way back to the 6th century. Many people described this monster as being "huge with a long neck and a smallish head". This description matches that of a plesiosaurus which is a pre-historic aquatic reptile. Other theories of what this monster could be include: an elephant, an overgrown eel, and a ghost. Many people spend their lives looking for evidence of of existence such as the expedition called the Sir Edward Mountain Expedition. Many pictures were released that claimed to be real and factual pictures of the Loch Ness monster. Then, people would admit to faking the picture. For example, a man put a crafted neck and head onto the front of a toy submarine! In conclusion, there is no evidence to support the Loch Ness monster to be real. Many ideas and information has been formed about this lake-monster, but until something is proven, nobody knows whats really true.

Grace'sSummary

For our project we did the blog on the Loch Ness monster, or as we like to call him [or her] Nessie. On our blog we put several interesting things about the Loch Ness monster that we put on our blog.
One of the things on out blog was called "The Beginning of Your Adventure" and basically summarized what the blog was pretty much about. Secondly we has a section called "What could Nessie Be?". It was about all of the different things the Loch Ness monster has been assumed to be, and just limiting out things that he couldn't be. We also has a section of pictures of Nessie and description's. In that section there was also an explanation of what some of the pictures could be. Another blog we posted was about the study of Nessie [yes, there is a study]. It is called cryptozoology . That is the study of unknown animals. We had another section about the legends of the Loch Ness monster, like where they came from and there is even an example of a children's tale of the monster. We also have some interesting articles posted about the Loch Ness monster. Some that seem to be for scaring and some for more input. The last article we have is our concluding article. It is basically summing up the information we have given and then basically leaving room for people to say if they believe or not. As you can see, this was a taste of what are blog was like.
